Local Activities in the Saumur Region

Set within the Loire Valley Nature park, this area has recently been included on UNESCO's world patrimony list to preserve the spectacular scenery along 180 miles of the Loire, the last wild river in Europe. The center of the Parc Naturel, Montsoreau, is just 15 kilometers from Champfreau manor house.

The Loire Valley is famous for its many châteaux where kings and their courts built an impressive array of stately homes ranging from medieval times through every period and style to the second empire in the mid 19th century.

This area is also known for its wine: Chinon, Bourgeuil or the rich, sweet wine of Coteau du Layon or the sparkling wines of Saumur. 'Le Cadre Noir', the classical academic riding school is based in Saumur (8 miles away) and gives gala evenings from April to October.

The 'Futureoscope of Poitiers' is only few hours drive away. So come and enjoy!

Christmas and New Year holiday rental available. During the holiday, the manor house is decorated with a Christmas tree, evergreens, holly and mistletoe.

Within easy driving distance there are châteaux, each with their own style and charm – from the medieval period through the 19th century.

Chateau de Saumur Writers and painters have been inspired by the castles of the Loire, with the Château d'Ussé being one of the most famous as it was the inspiration for Charles Perrault's folk tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Chinon, its castle overlooking the Vienne and the old town make for a lovely day excursion.

Fontevraud Abbey The 12th-century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is where Henry II, Eleanor of Acquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionhearted, are buried.

The elegant church built in the 12th and 13th centuries in nearby Candes-St-Martin is exquisite.
